KS3 Reading Challenge
The Academy believes that reading is crucial for students’ academic success. Our KS3 Reading Challenge aims to help students to improve their reading according to their ability – and to show reluctant readers that reading fiction does not have to hurt!
There are 3 levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold for each year group, and the Platinum Level which can be completed at various ages. Please see below for details. All students are expected to complete their respective Bronze Level and are encouraged to continue to Silver and to Gold. They are rewarded with a P2 for every Reading Challenge book read. Plus, a certificate is awarded for each completed level.
To enable all students to access the Reading Challenge, differentiated Bronze Level leaflets are available and are issued according to their teachers’ discretion. The majority of the differentiated texts are published by Barrington Stoke, who specialise in producing fiction books for dyslexic and reluctant readers. They are written for students’ age and interest level, not their reading age. In the Academy Library these books may be recognised by a pale green label in the Children’s and Teen Reads fiction areas.
