We specialise in a number of areas at PACA in addition to the broad based curriculum we follow. The whole school has specialisms in Entrepreneurship and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and mathematics).
In the Sixth Form we offer specialist academies in Digital Media, Cricket, Football and Dance and from year 7 academies in Football and Dance. Younger students and our local primary schools have access to these specialisms through a broad range of extra-curricular activities.
We focus on developing entrepreneurial attributes in all our students. The six PACA entrepreneurial attributes are passion, determination, risk taking, problem-solving, teamwork and creativity. We believe these qualities will help every PACA student lead a successful and happy life, whatever they choose to do. These attributes underpin every aspect of academy life and are recognised and rewarded.
We have a fantastic STEM Centre in school and students have STEM sessions as part of their timetable, as well as the opportunity to attend STEM clubs at lunchtime or after school.
We have chosen six qualities that we believe will help every PACA student lead a happy and successful life, whatever their chosen path.
We want our students to be passionate about their school, their learning and their life and to get the very best from everything they do. If they have a particular area of interest we will nurture that to the best of our ability.
It is challenging to learn new things, to improve and progress and to be the best that you can be. We encourage our students to be determined and help build their resilience and self-esteem.
3. Risk taking
Our school is a safe school and a great environment to take some appropriate risks. To progress we want our students to be brave, be prepared to speak up and to have a go at something new and understand that getting things wrong from time to time is all part of the learning process.
4. Problem solving
Every opportunity in life and life itself presents problems from time to time. We encourage our students to persevere when things go wrong and to find solutions or ways of working around a challenge.
Success in a school, workplace and community relies on strong teamwork. Learning how to collaborate, work well with and find inspiration through others is a key part of student success.
Our students live in a fast changing world. We want them to be open to new ideas, be lateral and innovative in their thinking and to fire their imaginations. We want to find suitable outlets for their creativity in the curriculum and daily school life.
We have a rich programme of entrepreneurship activities throughout the year ranging from House activities, to the full school Global Entrepreneurship Week activities. We work with local businesses and students have the opportunity to start up small businesses in school.
STEM Centre (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
At PACA we have an amazing STEM Centre in school that has just been awarded the Best STEM Club in the national STEMNET awards at the House of Lords. There are also a wide number of ways to get involved with STEM at PACA, ranging from lunchtime and after school clubs to working with outside organisations on a project. STEM is taught as part of the core curriculum.
Recent projects have included building a car, designing and coding a video game, creating an observatory and a tea plantation, and making natural cosmetics and toiletries. We have very close links with Sussex and Brighton universities who bring exciting STEM projects into school. University students have recently been showing us how to build robots.
We also work closely with our local primary schools. We have developed a Science Bus with Mile Oak Primary which is being used to teach science to local primary schools and we built a Words on Wheels mobile bookshop to be used as a small business.
